Gloss, Toner, Glaze: The Same Family

You will hear all three words, sometimes for the same product. The distinction that actually matters at the chair is what the job is.

• Toner is the word we use when the goal is neutralizing. Killing yellow in a fresh blonde, taking orange out of a lift, cooling something that has gone too warm.
• Gloss is the word we use when the goal is tone plus shine. Deepening a faded brunette, reviving a red, adding a warm caramel over the top of highlights.
• Glaze is usually the clear version, no pigment at all, purely for shine and to smooth the cuticle.

All three deposit rather than lift, all three wash out gradually, and none of them will make you lighter. If you want lighter, you want a highlight.

What a Gloss Actually Fixes

Blonde pulls warm. That is chemistry, not a mistake in your color. Hard water, chlorine, sun, heat tools and time all push lightened hair toward gold and brass, and a toner puts the cool tone straight back without touching the integrity of the hair.

On darker hair the same appointment does something different. Brunettes and reds fade rather than go brassy, so a gloss goes back over faded mid lengths and ends and brings the depth and richness back. Reds fade fastest of anything we do and a gloss is the cheapest way to keep one looking new.

And on any hair, glossed hair genuinely reflects more light. It is the reason a glossed head photographs so much better than the same head unglossed.

When to Book One

• Around the halfway point between highlight appointments, to refresh the tone without more lightener.
• Any time your blonde has gone yellow or your brunette has gone flat.
• Before an event, when you want maximum shine and there is no time for a full color.
• Alongside a root touch-up, so the whole head reads fresh rather than only the roots.
• On its own, as the shortest and gentlest color appointment on the menu.

How Long It Lasts

Four to six weeks for most people, and it fades gradually rather than growing out with a line, which is one of the nicest things about it. How long yours holds depends on how often and how hot you wash, and how porous your hair is. Lightened hair takes tone beautifully and also releases it faster.

To stretch it: cooler rinses, a color safe shampoo, and a purple or blue based product once a week rather than every wash. We carry Shibui and Aluram in the salon and your stylist will match one to your hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a gloss make my hair lighter?

No. A gloss only deposits color. Going lighter needs lightener, which is a highlight service. If you want brighter rather than better toned, book that instead.

Will a gloss cover my gray?

It will soften and blend gray, and on some heads that is enough. It will not give you solid coverage. For that you want a root touch-up or full color.

How long does a gloss appointment take?

Usually under an hour including a blow dry, which makes it the quickest color service on the menu.

Is a gloss damaging?

It is the gentlest color service we offer. There is no lightener involved and most gloss formulas are ammonia free, so on lightened hair it often leaves the hair feeling smoother than before.

Can I get a gloss without any other color service?

Absolutely, and plenty of guests do exactly that. It is a good standalone appointment when your color is still in decent shape and has just lost its brightness.

Why does my blonde keep turning brassy?

Warmth is what lightened hair does as it oxidizes, and your water is usually the biggest factor. A gloss resets it, and using a toning product weekly rather than daily holds it for longer.
